A Year of Capturing Miracles: My Journey as a NICU Volunteer Photographer

One year ago, I walked through the doors of Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, Oregon, camera in hand and heart wide open. I had just joined Capturing Hope, an incredible nonprofit dedicated to providing professional photography to families with babies in the NICU. I thought I understood what this journey would mean—but nothing could have prepared me for the profound love, strength, and hope I would witness over the next twelve months.

As a newborn photographer, I’m used to capturing the quiet, beautiful beginnings of life. But in the NICU, those beginnings are more complex. They’re fragile, fierce, and often uncertain. I’ve had the honor of photographing babies who weighed less than two pounds, those born months ahead of schedule, and little ones who’ve already fought battles many of us could never imagine. I’ve met parents whose strength and resilience have left me in awe, and nurses whose compassion seems endless.

Every single session has left an imprint on my heart.

Through Capturing Hope, I’ve been able to provide families with tangible memories during some of the most emotionally charged moments of their lives. These images are more than just photographs—they’re love stories, legacies, and reminders of hope in the face of fear.

What stands out the most over this past year are the miracle babies—the ones who defied the odds. I’ve seen tiny hands that once wrapped around just a fingertip now gripping bottles and waving at cameras. I’ve seen families who weren’t sure if they’d get a “first family photo” now returning home together, stronger than ever.

Being able to use my passion for photography to serve these families has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. It’s a reminder that the camera can be more than a tool for art—it can be a vessel for healing and connection.

To the families I’ve met: thank you for trusting me during such vulnerable moments. To the nurses and staff at St. Vincent’s: your dedication and compassion are unmatched. And to Capturing Hope: thank you for making this mission possible. It’s been an honor to be part of something so deeply important.

Here’s to one year of capturing miracles—and to many more ahead.

With gratitude,
Angi Carman
